OEE & MES Solutions

Measure What Matters. Improve What Counts.

Every manufacturer wants to run faster, reduce waste, and eliminate unplanned downtime. But you can't improve what you can't measure. ICS builds complete OEE and MES solutions on the Ignition platform with Sepasoft modules that give you real-time visibility into your Availability, Performance, and Quality — so you know exactly where you're losing production and how to fix it.

What Is OEE?

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the gold standard for measuring manufacturing productivity. It combines three critical factors into a single percentage:

Availability × Performance × Quality = OEE

Availability

Target: 90%+

Are we running when we should be? Measures the percentage of scheduled time that equipment is actually operating. Lost to breakdowns, changeovers, material shortages, or planned maintenance.

Performance

Target: 95%+

Are we running as fast as we should? Compares actual production speed to the ideal speed. Lost when running slower than designed — worn tooling, operator inexperience, jams, or minor stops.

Quality

Target: 99%+

Are we making good parts? The ratio of good parts to total parts produced. Lost to scrap, rework, defects, or startup rejects. Includes anything that doesn't meet spec on the first pass.

Example: 81.3% × 86.5% × 97.3% = 68.4% OEE

Most manufacturing plants average around 60% OEE. World-class is 85%+. Even small improvements translate directly to increased capacity without adding equipment or labor.

The Six Big Losses

Every minute of lost production falls into one of six categories. Our OEE system tracks all of them automatically.

CategoryLoss TypeWhat It Means
Availability1. Equipment FailureUnplanned stops — breakdowns, faults, tooling failures. Tracked by MTBF and MTTR.
Availability2. Setup & ChangeoverTime lost switching between products or adjusting equipment.
Performance3. Minor Stops & IdlingBrief interruptions under 5 minutes — sensor triggers, jams, blocked discharge.
Performance4. Speed LossRunning slower than ideal cycle time. Caused by worn equipment or material variability.
Quality5. Defects & ReworkParts that don't meet quality standards during steady-state production.
Quality6. Startup RejectsScrap produced during warm-up, ramp-up after changeover, or process stabilization.

Our Technology Stack

ICS builds OEE and MES solutions on the most powerful and flexible industrial software platform available.

Ignition by Inductive Automation

The industrial application platform with unlimited licensing. Connect as many clients, screens, tags, and connections as you need — no additional cost. Web-based, cross-platform, and built for enterprise scale.

Sepasoft MES Modules

Purpose-built MES modules for OEE tracking, SPC, Track & Trace, scheduling, and batch management. The leading MES solution for the Ignition platform, used by manufacturers worldwide.

Ignition Capabilities

FeatureWhy It Matters
Unlimited clients and screensEvery operator, supervisor, and manager gets real-time access — no extra licenses
Web-based HMI/SCADAAccess dashboards from any device with a browser — plant floor, office, or mobile
Cross-platform compatibilityRuns on Windows, Linux, macOS — deploy on existing hardware
Built-in historianStore years of production data for trending, analysis, and compliance
SQL database connectivityConnect to any database for enterprise reporting and business intelligence
Multi-site architectureScale from a single machine to enterprise-wide deployment across facilities

Sepasoft MES Modules

ModuleWhat It Does
OEE DowntimeAutomatically tracks Availability, Performance, and Quality. Categorizes downtime events and provides Pareto analysis of losses.
SPCStatistical Process Control with control charts, capability analysis (Cp/Cpk), and automated out-of-spec alerts.
Track & TraceFull genealogy tracking from raw materials through finished goods. Essential for recalls and compliance.
Recipe/BatchISA-88 compliant batch management. Configure recipes, manage equipment phases, and ensure consistent production.
SchedulingProduction scheduling with drag-and-drop interface. Optimize changeovers and sync with ERP systems.
Settings & ChangeoverManage equipment settings per product. Auto-push setpoints to PLCs during changeovers.

Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)

MES bridges the gap between your plant floor and your business systems. While ERP tells you what to make and when, MES tells you how it's actually going — in real time.

Production Visibility

Real-time production dashboards, work order tracking, live vs. planned comparison, and material consumption tracking.

Quality Management

SPC charts and control limits, automated quality checks, full product genealogy/traceability, and non-conformance management.

Operational Efficiency

Automated downtime categorization, changeover optimization, labor tracking, and ERP integration (SAP, Oracle, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OEE and why is it important?
OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) measures manufacturing productivity by combining Availability, Performance, and Quality into a single metric. It's the gold standard for identifying hidden production losses and unlocking capacity you already have without buying new equipment.
What software do you use for OEE tracking?
We build our OEE solutions on Ignition by Inductive Automation with Sepasoft MES modules. Ignition provides the SCADA/HMI platform with unlimited licensing, while Sepasoft adds purpose-built OEE tracking, downtime categorization, SPC, and production scheduling. We also integrate our MannyAI platform for AI-powered analytics.
What is a good OEE score?
World-class OEE is 85% or higher. Most manufacturers average around 60% before implementing automated tracking. Good OEE falls between 65-85%. Even small improvements translate to significant capacity gains — moving from 60% to 85% adds 40% more output from existing equipment.
What is MES and how does it relate to OEE?
MES (Manufacturing Execution System) manages and monitors production in real time. OEE is one key metric within MES. A full MES system also includes production scheduling, quality management (SPC), material tracking, recipe management, and ERP integration.
Can you integrate OEE with our existing equipment?
Yes. Ignition connects to virtually every PLC and industrial protocol (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Modbus, OPC-UA, MQTT, and more). We can pull data from your existing automation systems without replacing any hardware.
What is Sepasoft?
Sepasoft is the leading MES software provider for the Ignition platform. Their modular approach lets you start with OEE/Downtime tracking and expand into SPC, Track & Trace, Recipe Management, and Scheduling as your needs grow.
What is MannyAI?
MannyAI is ICS's proprietary AI-powered manufacturing intelligence platform. It analyzes OEE trends, identifies top losses, compares shift performance, and provides actionable recommendations through natural language queries. See our dashboard at manny.indconsys.com.
How long does an OEE implementation take?
A basic OEE implementation for a single production line can be deployed in 4-8 weeks. Multi-line or multi-facility MES deployments typically take 3-6 months. We use a phased approach so you start seeing value quickly.
